Overview
Public Safety-Fire Science Technology career pathway presents students with opportunities to pursue a number of fire service and emergency medical service careers through the acquisition of knowledge in the classroom and collaborative learning experiences. The Public Safety Pathway shares a similar course track with the law enforcement through a student's 10th and can be described as follows:
During a student's 10th grade year, an introduction to public safety is offered which exposes them to the career cluster and a more focused career pathway within which choices made be made to eventually concentrate in. This exposure is enhanced with speakers, field trips, and career investigation and exploration reports and projects which examine the entrance requirements, civil service hiring process, and the educational process necessary to gain access to these careers.
During a student's 11th grade year, a student chooses between the Fire Science Pathway or the Criminal Justice Pathway. Fire Science students learn about fire department organization, become familiar with the terminology, learn about fire chemistry, building construction, firefighter personal protective equipment, rescue and extrication, fireground hydraulics, ventilation, and fire department communications. Students also learn how to do patient assessment, provide patient field treatment, patient documentation, and ems communications.
The laboratory portion of the class prepares the students by emphasizing hands on skills such as donning personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Students will also learn to operate fire extinguishers, operate handlines and handle fireground ladders.
College
During the senior year, the students will participate in live fire exercises at the Dayton Fire Department Training Academy in conjunction with Sinclair Community College. Students will perform 240 hours of classroom instruction which will enable them to sit for a professional licensing examination as a nationally registered Level II firefighter. Students will continue their education at Sinclair Community College as they pursue an Associate's Degree in Fire Science Technology or Emergency Medical Services. Students will complete a capstone project during their senior year under the guidance of PCTC/SCC.
